Kinja'd!!!

I get it guys, you are trying to keep us safe by enforcing the no texting while driving law up here, but after !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! giving my girl a ticket for "texting while operating a motor vehicle" (we pulled the phone records, that ticket is toast), and this morning, Y'all can lick my grundle. This morning I was doing 2.5 under in the right lane on a 3 lane highway, undercover taurus was in the passing lane. Pulls over real far to the right in the middle lane doing a little over the speed we were. That guy was so close to sideswiping us to look and see what we were doing behind the wheel he almost caused a wreck on the highway. Of course I wasn't doing shit, but when you enforce it this way it just looks like a money grab, and no that isn't safe.

I don't know. I always thought that Stewart Copeland was a pretty good drummer.

+1 for Detroit. Cops rarely have pulled anyone I know over and when they do they usually get off.

I honestly considered it, but I dont need to get pulled over and harassed. They would have said it was "distracted driving" or something

Next time I hear of a texter killing someone on the highway, I'll remember how sick you are of police. Texting tickets are the best tickets.

so him coming within inches of my car to see if I was even texting (which I wasn't) is the correct way to enforce that?

It's come to a point where I don't include traffic cops as regular cops. They're just glorified meter maids.

Undercover or not, if a cop is encroaching on my vehicular bubble I will treat them like I do everyone else. Massive HONK.

I'll get behind a cell phone ban when the cops are made to stop typing on their laptops while driving. Oh wait—peace officers etc. get an exemption on that law. We've already had two cops in Austin hit people while they were on their laptop while driving. At least there is an exception for using your phone at a stop light. I never thought I would call Texas an enlightened state.

I believe cops in cities like Oakland and south Chicago have a tough job to do. I believe, however, that most cops - local and state - are just revenue enhancers.

when they start talking about "anticipated revenue" in the papers referring to traffic tickets, you know something done messed up

I use my iPod for music when I drive, and I'm worried I'll get caught "texting" because of it. If I want to skip a song, I have the hand motions completely memorized and I just reach over and do it without looking, (you know, exactly like I'd do to change the radio station) but that still means that for a brief moment I have a small glowing rectangle in my hand.

Once I was dong 80 km/h in a 90 km/h zone and got pulled over. That day was not the best.

I see cops driving around near my office holding a cell phone up to their ear all the time. The law for the rest of us plebs is 'hands free'. Also (pet peeve of mine) they never stop for pedestrians entering the crosswalk unless they absolutely have to - they'll floor it and speed on through.

The only person I knew in Detroit who got a speeding ticket was clocked at 122MPH.

You'd think, at that speed, they'd just let him keep going.

To be fair, doing 10 kph under is probably more dangerous than doing 10 kph over (since the rest of traffic is likely doing 10 kph over). The letter of the law would be more on your side, but the rules of the road are not.

I can appreciate Austin's cell phone ban based on their intent, but enforcement of it is always going to be a problem. I know that right now they're still out there looking for any reason at all to find a phone in your hand. That $500 ticket is just too attractive to them and the city coffers.

And yes, cops on their computers while driving is a problem too. Of course with most of them it's "do what I say, not what I do".

I appreciate what your saying but this was a secondary 2 lane highway in northern Quebec. Very little traffic up there.

Also if you were to the speed limit the entirety of the route, you would not live. The limit is 90 but some corners and one in particular is about a 40. lol.

Its all about education! With my huge 10.4" screen sitting high on my center console, I've had more than my share of chances to educate the police. Without being rude, I just switch the screen on the computer over to the text of the Illinois law governing screens within the drivers eyeline and read the exceptions list to the officer (my screen qualifies for 4 of the 6 exceptions, whereas only one is required).

I had one belligerent cop demand I take it down or go to jail and I refused. Then he asked me for my license, registration, and insurance. I have another screen with that info, so I pulled it up and handed him the tablet from the dock. (The Illinois law does not specifically say you must have a PAPER copy of your registration or proof of insurance.) He was pissed; ran me thru the system; and told me to go home. I put the tablet back into the dock on the dash and once my music resumed, I did. Asshole.

Kinja'd!!!

St Louis cops really need to get with the program. I inadvertently drove into a "hot spot policing" checkpoint late last year, luckily without the tablet. But when the cop asked for proof of insurance, I handed him my smartphone. He had no idea what to do with it and demanded a paper copy. I asked for his supervisor..... They had me pull outta line, one of the many tow trucks prepositioned himself to hook up my car. Twenty minutes and three supervisors later, everybody learned a lesson and I was free to go.

man what in the holy hell are they doing out there? Good on you for knowing your rights for real. The cop last night was oblivious to the law, but said "I am a police officer, I know more about the law than you do" literally. Well it is going to be struck down in court for her, but that is still time off work you dont get back. Also that screen looks sweet as hell in there
